UUIDs show up everywhere in software: database keys, API request IDs, test data, file names that must never clash. Writing a script to generate a batch of them is overkill when you just need some now.

v4 or v7?

  • v4: 122 random bits. The classic choice.
  • v7: starts with a millisecond timestamp, then random bits. IDs created later sort later, which keeps database indexes tidy and makes logs easier to follow. A great default for new database tables.

Copy them or download a file with one UUID per line.

Generating UUIDs in code

LanguageCode
JavaScript (browser, Node 19+)crypto.randomUUID() (v4)
Pythonimport uuid; uuid.uuid4()
PostgreSQLgen_random_uuid() (v4)
macOS / Linux terminaluuidgen
Windows PowerShell[guid]::NewGuid()

Good uses for a batch

  • Seeding a test database with realistic IDs.
  • Fixtures for unit tests and API mocks.
  • Spreadsheet imports that need a unique key per row.
  • File names for uploads that must never clash.

Summary

The UUID generator gives you v4 or v7 UUIDs in bulk, formatted how you need them, instantly.

FAQs

What's the difference between UUID v4 and v7?

v4 is fully random. v7 starts with a timestamp, so IDs sort by creation time, which makes them better as database primary keys.

Can UUIDs collide?

In practice, no. The chance of a v4 collision is astronomically small.

Can I get them without hyphens or in uppercase?

Yes. Choose the format before copying or downloading.

Is a UUID the same as a GUID?

Yes. GUID is Microsoft's name for the same 128-bit identifier.

Are UUIDs safe to use as secret tokens?

Don't rely on them for that. Use a dedicated random token for passwords, API keys or reset links. UUIDs are identifiers, not secrets, and v7 reveals when it was created.

Are the UUIDs generated on a server?

No. They're created in your browser.
